Introduction
With one quarter of the world’s urban population living in slums (UN-Habitat, 2015), the sustainable development of these communities is essential for inclusive, safe and resilient cities.
However, the lack of visible physical and aesthetic order in informal settlements leads policy makers and the public to form prejudicial assumptions about the quality of life in ‘slum’ areas.
