Microplastic pollution is a critical environmental issue with profound impacts on marine life, ecosystems, and human health. This project addresses the challenge by leveraging data with storytelling to raise awareness and drive action.

Through interactive charts and compelling narratives, this presentation educates users on the severity of microplastics pollution through an interactive web experience, ultimately, inspiring the reader to contribute to change.

The project aims to make the invisible problem of microplastics visible and actionable for a wide audience.

Before we dive in,

Here is the data that informed my study.

This study was inspired by alarming statistics I found on the web. I received a mark of 99.97% in my undergraduate study for this presentation which included a slideshow, speech and live demo.

I confirmed this insight was meaningful with a local Marine Biologist who possessed over 20 years in the industry.

Here, I am prototyping the visualisations needed to tell this story in low fidelity. The interactive charts are comparing Fish populations and density of Microplastics globally. This allowed me to plan the structure of my final product.

This interactive plot is comparing 4 different variables and uncovering relationships between these variables. Countries with low fish populations and high plastic density were at higher risk of contamination. This formed the basis for the ideation of my solutions.
Design Process

I began by learning various chart types and how they can be used to form data driven narratives

These chart types were key for transforming data and information into captivating visuals. At this stage, I was grasping how to add value to data and information by telling visual stories that inform and inspire.
